DIAMOND HOUSE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Diamond House is an alteration and addition, located on a corner site in Malvern East. The project retains the existing Edwardian weatherboard dwelling, restoring its original character, and introduces a contemporary addition joined by a glazed link.

The triangular geometry of the site drives the form of the new addition. Located at the pointed end of the wedge, the new two-storey volume embraces the site’s angular boundaries, generating a new faceted “diamond” form. Mediating setback envelopes to the neighbour and street; the resultant geometry has echoes of the pitched roof forms of the existing house and neighbouring dwellings. The continuous metal shingle cladding unifies walls and roof, while punched windows with deep-set aluminium reveals are strategically positioned to frame outlooks and protect the privacy of residents.

By integrating heritage restoration, a carefully resolved contemporary intervention, and sustainable design strategies, Diamond House offers a benchmark for contemporary additions in the area. The project demonstrates how modern architecture can respect historical context, optimise challenging sites, and contribute positively to both its occupants and the community.
